About Us

Covenant House Texas (CHT) opened its doors in 1983 to provide shelter for homeless, abused and abandoned youth ages 18 – 24. After more than 35 years of service, CHT is still one of the only service providers in Texas of its type. CHT offers an extensive continuum of care to homeless youth including mental health and substance abuse counseling, educational and vocational training, transitional and permanent living programs, street outreach and prevention, pastoral ministry and parenting classes in addition to providing the basic necessities of food, clothing, medical care and safe shelter from the streets for youth in crisis.

Mission

Covenant House Texas provides homeless and runaway youth a safe haven from the dangers of street life and abuse as well as provide them with the necessary skills, training, and emotional support to choose positive life alternatives and develop into self-sufficient adults.

History

Covenant House was founded in 1972 in response to the growing problem of kids living unprotected on the harsh streets of New York City.  Since then, the organization has become the largest private shelter organization for homeless kids, with 30 locations spanning North and Central America.  Covenant House Texas opened in 1983 to provide shelter and sanctuary for homeless, abused, and abandoned youth under the age of 24 living on Houston’s streets.  Located in the Montrose neighborhood, CHT primarily serves Houston and Harris County, the third most populous county in the United States.
