The 2019 Covenant House Texas (CHT) Tigers basketball team had a very successful run this season. The team debuted in June with a glitzy media day, organized by Youth Engagement Specialist and team coach, Ron Armstrong. During the event, team members were interviewed by CHT staff and posed for photos. Coach Armstrong started the team with the sponsorship of Texas Southern University in order to give the youth an opportunity to participate in organized sports and learn teamwork.
Although it was their first year, the CHT Tigers made the Quillian Center A& E League’s playoffs. They progressed to the second round before falling to last year’s champions. Overall, the basketball team finished third. “It was a pleasurable and positive season. We finished the regular season 4-3 and 1-1 in the playoffs. Not bad for our first year,” reflects Assistant Coach Reggie Cross.
With a great foundation laid, next year there will be some exciting changes and additional work to be done to achieve their future goals. “Five players will return and ten new players will be added for next season and we will add one additional coach,” says Coach Armstrong.
The basketball team will gear up again in March. The goal for 2020 is to win the tournament – but more importantly, to give homeless youth a chance to have a positive experience, and to learn discipline and structure — skills they can apply to their daily lives.
