Harvey: CHT One Year Later

It is hard to believe that one year ago Houston was holding its breath waiting to see what Hurricane Harvey would bring.  After seeing the destruction in Rockport we knew it could be pretty bad but no one could have guessed the magnitude of Harvey and his wrath.

Like so many in our city, Covenant House Texas was impacted in ways we could not imagine. Our shelter had extreme water damage from the 50 inches of rain that fell relentlessly in those 5 days. We kept our doors open and welcomed anyone who needed refuge. Our staff stayed around the clock for multiple days to make sure the safety and needs of our youth were in place.

The damage to our aging facility was substantial, we needed to replace two exterior walls, patch ceilings, install a new roof and replace windows.  It was a little overwhelming but then the support started to come.

We were in awe of the donations and well wishes  that came our way from all over the country and even Canada. Each day brought new friends in the way of organizations, companies and individuals to our campus with donations in tow.

Americares was one of the first to contact us to inquiring what our needs were. Through their partnership, we had a visit from JJ Watt. Jon Bon Jovi and his JBJ Soul Foundation sent support. Freeform TV and Houston native and Disney star, Cierra Ramirez spent an entire Saturday with us and gave us an early Christmas Party.

There are too many generous supporters to name all of them, but the people of Houston and America stepped up, and we will be forever grateful.
