Covenant House Texas welcomes LGBTQ homeless youth. We have taken steps as a community to provide a safe space for LGBTQ youth. According to the True Colors Fund, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) young people are 120% more likely to experience homelessness than non-LGBTQ youth.
Last year CHT partnered with the True Colors Fund to provide better training for staff and better services for LGBTQ youth who are experiencing homelessness. There are many reasons LGBTQ youth find themselves homeless, from rejection and conflict in the home to poverty. It’s not one cause, but many.
LGBTQ homeless youth also have unique needs. CHT helps all homeless youth with emotional support, housing, employment, and medical care. LGBTQ youth may also need transition related help such as legal support for name/gender marker changes and transgender specific healthcare.
The CHT staff is working to make a difference in the lives of LGBTQ youth.
