Youth Spotlight: Scott

Scott found his way to Covenant House Texas, as many do, having fallen on hard times and in desperate need of a safe haven. Coming from a dysfunctional household environment, Scott took the first chance to leave home and attend college. In the middle of pursuing his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering, Scott was forced to leave school to care for his ailing grandmother. Sadly, Scott’s grandmother needed more care than he could provide and, after placing her in a long-term care facility, he was left without a home.

Unable to rent an apartment due to his young age, Scott was surviving on the Houston streets when his uncle encouraged him to reach out to Covenant House Texas.

“I felt really lucky to get here when I did,” said Scott. “I was able to get through the admission process quickly and made it just in time for dinner.” He was grateful to find a safe place with staff members that made him feel welcome, noting that before that first dinner, he couldn’t remember the last hot meal he had. “Initially, I was scared to come here, but after getting oriented and seeing how everything was here, I was finally able to relax,” he noted.

Since his arrival, Scott has been bolstering his physical fitness by playing basketball and running to prepare for his military dreams. He was able to get medical care at the on-site clinic following a small bout with the flu. Scott has used his time at Covenant House Texas to get his education and his employment goals back on track by taking full advantage of the Education and Career Services Center. From polishing up his resume to expanding his abilities in our life skills courses, Scott has been able to seek out employment opportunities and resume his academic career.

“For now, I just want to be able to live on my own and finish college. My long-term goal is to graduate from college and join the Air Force so that I can work on jets.” Determined to get back on his feet, Scott’s goals of finishing college and joining the military are closer than ever to being realized as he secures his employment and makes plans to return to school in the fall.

“I would tell anyone walking through those doors, just don’t be afraid, there are people who care about you here and a lot of us are going through the same stuff, so just talk to us and you can find your way,” he shared.
