Statement on George Floyd

For months now, we have all watched the tragic death of George Floyd over and over again, most recently throughout the trial these past weeks. We mourn for Mr. Floyd’s family, friends and all Black Americans as they continue to relive the trauma and the sorrow of his death and other recent events where Black lives were tragically taken.

These events underscore the trauma and stress that Black Americans live by and experience every day. We mourn for the loss and pain they endure over and over again.

While justice for the Floyd family cannot heal such deep and historic wounds, the hope is that it provides some solace and propels much needed change.

So what can we do in the face of the hatred and violence that brought us to this day? Our answer is not to respond with more hate, division and violence. We must continue to stand together against racism, violence and injustice by showing a better way.  At Covenant House Texas, our response to conscious division and racism is love — radical love.

We will continue to welcome, accept and protect every young person that seeks safety and shelter inside our walls. We will model the change we want to see in the world. We will demonstrate every day that love, not hate, is the answer.

This is not the end of this story, it’s just the beginning. There is much work to do.  The change we want to see starts with me, with you and all of us united in sharing a love so powerful that it dispels the darkness of hatred and division.
