CHT Unveils New Basketball Team

Covenant House Texas celebrated Meet the Players Media Day on Wednesday, June 5, 2019. The event organized by Youth Engagement Specialist, Ron Armstrong aka “Coach,” introduced players on the new CHT basketball to staff and residents. The event was designed to resemble a real NCAA press conference.

Covenant House staff from all departments took time to interview the team ahead of the new season, which began on June 11. The players answered questions and posed for photos. Special guests included emcee Cornelius Blackshear, Rory Coleman, and Larry “The Chatta Box” Hale from KTSU. Executive Director, Leslie Bourne also spoke to attendees. The team also unveiled new uniforms.

Coach Armstrong designed the event to give CHT youth the chance to experience the process and the atmosphere of an NCAA college basketball media day. The basketball team was formed in April to give the CHT youth an opportunity to participate in organized sports and learn team work. Practice is held twice a week, although the team is still looking for a home gym. This season, the games are held at the Quillian Center on the Westchase campus of First Methodist Church on Tuesday evenings.

“Our goal is to show a positive image of Covenant House and give our young adults an opportunity to play organize basketball and take this positive experience with them for many years to come!” says Coach and CHT staff member, Ron Armstrong.
